In the name of Beauty

From 'Features' in M'Daily 16072013:
    Snails on faces! You Dare?

I read this article by AFP and was astonished with what people would do to themselves in the name of Beauty ... But, it was a good article ;)

Before reading this article, I have read and seen what others would do to beautify themselves. I have read about some people who bleached their bodies to whiten them. Also put their faces and noses under the knives just to make face lifts, oval shapes with sharp noses and what nought.

I have also seen many movies about people undergoing plastic surgery just because they are not satisfied with what Allah SWT has given them. They want bigger breasts, face lift, high and sharp noses and bigger eye lids.

I have also seen with my little Chinese eyes some people went through Botox just to make their lips fuller, their cheeks more plump and face shiny and wrinkle free. I have also seen enough about my friends who went for collagen injections just to make their skin smooth and plumpish. They believe that it strengthened and elasticized their skin forever.

I totally agree that we must all look after ourselves well through good hygiene and stay sweet and pretty irrespective of gender. But I certainly do not believe that we should 'punish' ourselves by undergoing unnecessary surgeries or allow alien ingredients into our bodies unless they are for medical reasons such as deformity and health care.

Isn't our Creator has created us enough   according to his specification. We are his unique creations! Aren't we not his best design? Aren't we not feeling blessed, appreciative and full of gratitude with what were given to us? Are all that we have still not enough that makes us want to have more or worst still to change what His Almighty has done and what was meant for us? Sometimes I do not understand with what some people want in their life  - absolute power and sheer enjoyment? What about gratitude and appreciation?

But, undoubtedly I believe that we human beings have desires or in Arabic it is called nafs and in my language nafsu. Indeed, it is common and to some extent it is healthy to have desires. But, these desires, if they are not properly controlled will destroy us. They will become very detrimental. They are all inside us! But, We are also provided by Allah SWT brains to regulate the Nafs. And, not vice versa.

So, coming back to in the name of 'Beauty' I am all in for those who had done and wish to do something in maintaining their beauty and health care such as taking supplements as prescribed by medical practitioners or traditional means via herbal intakes which are non detrimental to our bodies. Also going through physical fitness or gymnasium to keep fit and healthy or just plain walking and simple exercises. Most importantly is our food intake where it should be a balanced diet. Not more not less. All these could maintain beauty and make ourselves Beautiful!

As of using snails on faces in order to obtain slime powers "to remove old cells, heal the skin after sun burn and (to) moisturize it" I think I'll leave it to the dermatology experts and also the persons who are undergoing the treatment.

Similarly, there are some people who underwent similar treatment but instead of snails, they used leeches or lintah. Others used powder like thanakha, yellowish white paste from ground bark thanakha wood. Also some people used dead sea mud as face mask. They believe the muds "draw toxins out of the skin like a magnet and they restore the skin back to a natural balance" (Laura Heilman).

All in all, in the name of 'Beauty' many people will resort to something which they feel could enhance their appearance or what could make them Beautiful. It is a sensitive subject  and very subjective in nature as often said: Beauty is in the eyes of the Beholder."
